Several states, including Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio, have enacted laws regulating the business.
One of the more interesting aspects of the online gambling industry is the competition between online casinos and sports betting sites. This competitive atmosphere can be attributed to the fact that most casinos offer both types of games. Another aspect of this competition is the technological innovation involved. Although some casinos offer games that can be played via mobile devices, most are still PC-based. Online casinos use software to enable users to place wagers and manage their accounts.
A new federal law, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), was enacted in December 2006. It provides a framework for policing and punishing Internet gambling operations. It also contains a number of other provisions, such as the fact that financial transaction providers are prohibited from accepting payments from clients who make illegal Internet bets.
The UIGEA has also spawned a number of congressional investigations, some of which are geared toward weeding out low-level gambling operations. However, the federal government’s ability to enforce its draconian anti-gambling laws has been questioned on several constitutional grounds. For example, the federal government has been criticized for not providing enough protection for individual privacy rights, especially when it comes to wagering on the internet. In addition, a number of state officials have expressed their fears that the Internet could provide an avenue for the spread of legal and illegal gambling across state lines.
Whether or not these laws are effective in their stated objectives is a subject for another day. In the meantime, however, online gambling has become more accessible to the general public, thanks in no small part to the efforts of online gambling operators. Many of these sites have introduced more complicated, multi-featured software programs that allow the average online user to enjoy a wide variety of casino and sports-related games without leaving home.
